Baltasar Hidalgo Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 It was a calm, sunny day on the high seas around Cuba, merchants actively trading along the coastline, Spanish fleets protecting their territory and Baltasar sailing on his gunboat with his 40 crew mates. We were on our way to Mariel from Habana when we were ambushed by a thick, creeping fog. We were cautious about going about our business, but we kept going our way. "Ding, ding, ding" rung the bells, as our lookout spotted a ship, it had suddenly appeared out of the fog, we turned off to try and escape but it was keeping up. The fog was thinning, we approached the edge of the fog, but the ship was still in our sights. We exited the fog, loaded all cannons (only two of them) and prepared for battle. The ship, nicknamed the 'phantom ship' by fellow crew exited the fog, it was a brig, too strong for us to take on but we attempted anyway. We turned and fired many times at the brig while narrowly escaping broadside after broadside from this 'phantom ship'. Mid battle, the wind turned strong, like a gale wind had suddenly taken off. We turned our gunboat to try and maintain our position and stability, but under all attempts, we failed, the ship started to lisp, rolling over slowly at the force of the gale wind. More and more we rolled, it got harder and harder to stand straight, but it kept on rolling. I crossed my heart and called for god to save us as many men could not swim, but alas our god did not come to save us. Our ship violently rolled, capsizing and taking every member of our crew to Davy Jones Locker. Morale of story is that capsizing is likely when using your gunboat, good fun though. Here's some screenies of my glorious adventure (Attachments) Viva la Espana! (PvP 2 US - Spanish Faction) 11
Loco Bandito Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Now it all makes sense what the pray button is for. 4
Sir Texas Sir Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 We are so going have to do a small/large battle and get every one to bring one of these things lol Hell even a big battle in the OW would be a blast. Half of us will prob sink by tipping over.
ironhammer500 Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Wonder if you get a leak the dude starts getting a Bucket and shoveling water out, sure a lot of those waves will make their way into the boat.
Werewolf Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Now that is cool. I had no idea you could actually capsize. Neat!
angriff Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 That seems like a waste of devs time... and ours.. If they want to put in very calm water or river fighting well then ok but there is nothing interesting about that ship.
angriff Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Really what good is it in a world for First Rates and 4th rates being the main schticks.
Tonnerre de Brest Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Really what good is it in a world for First Rates and 4th rates being the main schtick Considering that we're either in a battle mode or boarding mode, then considering that I can't get shot at by snipers while in battle mode I could see myself attacking a large ship and camping right under his cannons, against his hull, with my gunboat and just like a delightful Chinese torture, put leaks in him at point blank... one bullet at a time.... drip...drip... drip.

If the ship you're shadowing maneuvers towards you and you have to make a sharp turn chances are you're gonna go belly up. Also that scenario sounds infuriating =P

I was thinking boarding towers too. They could get in under every one nose grape/ball the crap out of the towers and than be gone.
Rhodry Heidenrich Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 (edited) Took my Gunboat out for an adventure awhile ago. Ended in capsizing. 11/10 would capsize while attacking a trader and dodging fire from a Connie again. Edited August 20, 2016 by Vhyx
VonCarra Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Also, seems that ai puts all misfits and ex-pirates to man the gunboats... After i tried gunboat and capsized it After few minutes i then tested gunboat as tagging fleetship. Well no. I took rattle + gunboat on fleet and tagged ai traders brig. After 7 minutes of battle gunboat was able to hit ai brig twice, once with front cannon and once with rear carro:) Also in that 7 minutes my gunboat: Rammed me twice, and was able to push my rattle off of my course, that puny ship... Managed To beach himself once and stood minute or so doing nothing... After 7-8 minutes my ai gunboat sailed in stern of brig, got direct hit and sunked:) So, in less than 20 minutes i Lost one officer + 40 crew by capsizing gunboat and then another 40 crew for stupid ai gunboat staying all the time at traders brig shooting sector... All i still have to try is to try is to put golden fireship uppgrade on gunboat and try that
Guest Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Gunboat would be maybe good to chase traders lynx.
Ted Nougat Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Gunboat would be maybe good to chase traders lynx. Assuming anyone sails one, considering they're essentially useless now.

Until his turns to starboard and suddenly you are under water.
CubanB Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 How bad was the lisp? Are we talking tongue tied or what?
Rhodry Heidenrich Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 One intrepid Gun Boat skipper (me) decided to take on a fleet of 1st/2nd rate ships. Science wound up being performed. A hypothesis was formed regarding the results of said Gun Boat being rammed by a Bucentare. Predictable results occurred. Screenshots courtesy of Sir Texas Sir 1
Sir Texas Sir Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 I was just popping on here to post the same thing. Yah I even warned him I was going full ramming speed. Though I would have to say until some lucky ball shot demasted him he was like this little annoying nat and we where laughing so hard in TS.
Loco Bandito Posted August 24, 2016 Posted August 24, 2016 Yeah lol he was flying all around the 1st rates was funny.
Rhodry Heidenrich Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 It's too bad I didn't take any video or screen shots. The sheer number of cannonballs flying at me..... 1
Archaos Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 I didnt find any problem with the gunboat tipping over even with a sharp turn (maybe the weather was calmer) and I was part of the 7 gunboat fleet that took down a pirate Constitution with the aid of a Snow. We shortly after took down a pirate LGV with just 7 gunboats as the Snow had to leave. Its a slow process but if the gunboats swarm a single ship they can take it down. There is a video of the Constitution battle in another gunboat thread by Major Gosnell.
