Ned Loe Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I suggest devs take a look at these images and if possible improve sail animation based on wind angle. Pay close attention to images 4 and 5. Here we can see a nice transition on sail turning. First you see bottom part of the sail is being turned followed by the top section. Something like this would be awesome in NA. Right now sails turn in one block and it looks very unrealistic and dull. By making sails twist a little when turning through the wind could make ships look much better. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 8
maturin Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I'm pretty sure it's not always like that, though. In pictures 4 and 5 the ship is in various stages of tacking. What you're seeing isn't sail 'twist,' it's the yards being braced around consecutively instead of simultaneously. When you are tacking the yards are swung around by the wind as much as the hands at the braces. Each yard was trimmed a bit differently to begin with, and the wind is fairer aloft, so the various sails will come aback or start drawing at different times. Or if you are off with your timing, traversing the lower yards might be a long slow slog against the pressure of the wind. In other situations where you are trimming the yards, there's no reason a well-drilled crew wouldn't do everything simultaneously. 1
Pugwis Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 (edited) The rope that hold the sails are not in the good position and don't react correctly, and that's why those rope and sails can "pass / cut" through the cordage that lead to the top mast.and other stuff like that... It's just like in potbs, and old naval RPG, the rope are alway like this and that sucks. Edited August 14, 2016 by Pugwis

On the ships I've sailed, the only time the yards aren't braced around together is when there is a shortage of crew. Then, the course yard is braced around and the upper ones in the stack naturally follow with a delay. Then, the upper yards are trimmed properly. Now for transiting, fanned and properly cockbilled yards would be nice, but in battle that level of trim and the relatively small increase in speed would be a wasted effort while fighting and maneuvering the ship. Just keep the stack aligned to the new angle, then get back to the guns (or plugging holes, dragging wounded below, etc.).
