Since installing this game a few weeks ago, I have been using the PvE server, because I was told that this is the best server to play as a single player, in order to gain some experience before getting familiar with the game. To be honest, I am quite at home with this situation and I am not really all that bothered about playing as multiplayer. But what is the difference between the two? I am finding this game to be enjoyable so far, but not that easy to understand everything you need to know. It all seems rather complicated apart from sailing around in the Open World and engaging in the Admiralty Order Missions, to enter a few AI Battles. I am slowly moving up the ranks and gaining lots of gold and I am presently at the rank of !st Lieutenant with a Navy Brig as head of my fleet.

So if someone can trow more light on the way the different servers operate, I would be much appreciated.

Difference is basically that in PVP you can attack and be attacked by players and PVE you can not be attacked or attack other players.

Thank you. So until I gain more experience, I am better off staying with PvE?

No.

Trading and crafting experience is the same on both PvE & PvP as is capturing AI traders but if you stay on the PvE server for years, you will be lacking a certain and essential experience that can only be attained on a PvP server.

Just do it, make the move over to Euro PvP1 (if you are in the Medway).

All in good time. I am happy the way things are for the moment as a single player. I am not really interested in multiplayer just yet. I just wanted to know what the difference was.

Remember all your ships and stuff don't cross over.  So no money either.  It's hard to grind up without help when you change servers and is rank up.  To be honest I rarely got hit in PvP2 when I was leveling up and solo tradeing without a clan.  If you get a clan they will watch out for you and help you.   It's best to learn about PvP and such at an early stage so your not lost later when you switch over.  It's not funny watching Captains and above PvP for the frist time and rage cause they are getting sinked by other players, "BUT THE AI NEVER SUNK ME LIKE THIS."   That cause AI can be very predictable and are some times flat out idiots in combat.  Players on the other hand....well they can be too, but many of them aren't and by that level they know there ships and the combos that can give some one a very bad day.

I have used PvE to test a few things, but I dont' stay over there. Hell I sold that 2nd rate so I can buy some decent ships to grind and test a few things without other players around, but other than that I'm not on there.

Oh and remember your labor hours are link to all your chars on all the servers.  Though your blue prints aren't.  So you will have to relearn all those Blue Prints you earned on one server.

you dont get to keep your items and stuff but your rank stays when you swap.....pvp is the better experience to learn in as AI is a retard

In that case I think I will stick with PvE I have sweated long and hard to quire my assets, gaining a few ships and quite a nice accumulation of gold. So I am not going to loose all that, when I can enjoy just taking on AI. I am not all that bothered about the multiplayer aspect of the game, I am enjoying myself playing as I am at the moment. If you could take all your acquired assets over with you, then I would consider it. But to start all over again making enough money to buy some decent ships, would take a while.

Clear and simple explanation.

PvP - non stop ship battles, danger on every corner and ship loss.

PvE - quiet peaceful environment for those who enjoy tranquility of single player gameplay.

Yes I gathered that would be the case. I think I am happier playing in the Sand Box with all the other non hardened players. I am not really bothered about fighting against other real players. As I have already said, I am not really into playing with others, I prefer to play games alone. Not that I am anti social or anything, but I just can't be bothered playing to certain rules and the like. Playing solo, you can do what you want, when you want and I have found the game to be very enjoyable so far. Enjoy yourselves pounding the hell out of each other. I suppose it's my age that has made me come to this decision, I am not your average gamer who loves multi-player gaming. I bought this game because I love the Age of Sail, being an ex Royal Navy man. It is the best game of this kind that has ever been made so far, much better than the original "Age Of Sail". The graphics are far superior and this is what really attracted me to this game.

So I think sticking with PvE is the best option for me, where I can just play at my own leisurely pace.

That would be a good choice for every new player. Once you get all the skills you need in PvE and get bored it will naturally be the time to move to the hardcore PvP server knowing you will do well and fight hard.

That would be the advantage of being in a clan as they would provide funds/ships, if you did feel the urge to go to PVP server some people would help regardless of clan membership

We have one clan member that was worried about grinding up all his stuff when he switched over.  We just gave him ships and money to set things up and he was back on his feet other than the fact he didn't have any BP's for his crafting, but he put the Gifted perk on him until he got all the BP's and more back.   That was the part that killed me when I switched from PvP1 EU server to PvP2 US server I was mid level and had to grind all my BP's back up from my crafting levels.  It didn't take me long even in a basic cutter to get caught up on ships and gold.

I thought same when I first started.  Played on PvE for several months, up through RADM and craft level 50.  Absolutely no regrets doing so; met great folks, had fun.

Then started over on PvP1.  Without clan/help, it was still pretty quick to rebuild.  Having started with that Basic Cutter, in two weeks, back up to a decent selection of (self-crafted) ships up through 2nd rate, 8 outposts, level 3 shipyard, and most BP's (lacking only Santi and a couple of 7th-rates).  This isn't any great achievement...in fact, that's exactly the point; it's not hard since the introduction of Gifted/Foreman/Shipmaster perks, combined with wreck-loot Labor Contracts.

Not saying you should or shouldn't switch over.  Only saying that if you do change your mind later, the "rebuild my stuff" aspect of playing on a new server really isn't as daunting as it might appear.  Don't let that influence your decision.

And obtw on PvP1:  Absolutely no regrets doing so; have met (and continuing to meet) great folks, having fun.

I will bear in mind what you say Bramborough and may well decide to change over sometime later. Being new to this game, I have still a lot to learn about all the different parts of the game. and how everything fits together. I don't fully understand a lot of it, because I have never played these kind of games before. It's all really new to me. I don't really understand anything about this crafting and how to start off with it, it all seems a bit of a puzzle of what to do. Then there are the Buildings and Outposts, that is something else I am not sure about. It seems to be a long learning curve for people who are new to these sort of games.

Its really about what you like.

If the idea of not knowing what is around the next island excites you.... whether its 10 ships to sink you or 1 to hunt (simple examples)...   than PvP is for you.

Some people like it, some people worry about losing their precious ships. Its not for everyone, but I would not still be playing the game if it were not for PvP. Nothing can replace the unpredictability of human players in a sandbox, its great fun.

A fellow Chatham man?

We have a small group of 'mature' players on PVE who assist each other while having no need to abide by rules. The social contact is part of the fun and you might find something similar enjoyable.Try joining a clan......you can always leave if you find you dont like it.Guidance on the points you mention is then available.

As you can see there are as many reason for being on one server or the other. I do enjoy the PvE server on those days where free time is minimal or when I just want an easy sailing experience and not have to worry about the world I am in.

I also enjoy the challenges the PvP servers brings to the environment. While the territory in the PvE world is static (no port changes) it is easy to make a traders empire with outpost at numbers locations throughout the Caribbean. I have a core set of outpost to supply the shipbuilding and crafting. Then I have others in the far reaches of the map as places where I can be "home" when not in my national waters. In the PvP world the strategy is very different. You never know when a 0ort will be taken away from and everything you have in it is gone. It can be tough to swallow some of these losses if you placed everything in them. So the approach to be diversified in the world becomes a "real" at risk business setup.

I personally like the trade aspect and some ship to ship battles (both can be had on either server). I don't care if it's an AI or real person, it's not that important to me. I have had no desire to participate in a Port Battle, maybe someday but not now.

Overall the PvE server has allowed me the opportunity to learn the game in a very peaceful environment. Because of this learning arena, I have been able to apply the craft I have learned in the PvE to the PvP world and have done very well on both PvP servers.

All that I have done to date has been as a solo player. It has taken months but they have been very enjoyable months to get to this point. I have had bad experiences with clans in the past and since I have avoided this aspect of the game. The game is well designed to accommodate the solo and clan players. Neither is style of play better than the other for the sheer fun of the game.

Enjoy your career path in whatever server suits your needs. There is nothing stopping you from trying all servers, which leads to more experiences. You make this game what it is for yourself.

Sail on, my friend!

Not really. The PvP experiences will let you get a feel for how the game should be played.  Simply doing PvE admiralty orders over and over again will only teach you how the NPCs are programmed.

On the PvP servers you can do the exact same things as on the PvE server. The reverse is not true.

Thank you for your description of the way you have moved on with the game. I am enjoying what PvE has to offer, where I can just ignore any AI that I choose to, or maybe attack a ship if I fancy a bit of action, besides the Missions that you can choose from when in Port, which are pretty much the same really. What I like about PvE is the ability to just do what I want, play when I want and not have the worry of being challenged my real players, or getting hounded by the lone Pirate who takes a shine to my unarmed Trader loaded with goodies. I am safe within the realms of Neptunes PvE.
