That looks like the gunboat that was promised as a reward Jan 1st, 2015.  They were having some trouble with it in Unity I think.  Maybe this means they've got the trouble figured out.  

 

Just a guess, I have no inside information on this.

In game? A tag ship maybe against Lynx,Privateer, etc (depending on speed)

 

In real life the purposes of such boats at this era was to guard harbors against ships boats on cutting out actions or to board and turn fireships away. 42lb carronade loaded with grape or buck and ball would be devastating to a longboat full of men.

Everything is seaworthy if you're nuts enough. The U.S. Navy sent some of their gunboats to the Barbary Coast.

Depends if the First rate 68 Ib cannonades fire back? Sure those 68IB rounds would put a massive hole in the little boat.

I wonder if these could be utilized for some type of cutting out expedition mini game?  Go in at night and pull some capers on an enemy port.
