So what I find conflicting is that if you surrender your vessel when it is about to sink so you save you crew you had no reason to have any boarding modes such as Marine, Swordfighting, Muskets, Barricades.  You still surrender the vessel to prevent lose of entire expensive crew.  This negates the reason to ever load these upgrades.  So something should change in this regards.

striking your colours should happen in the first 2 minutes or if your ship is sinking.   problem solved.

now surrendering should have negs attached far more than it has.

Why in the first two minutes? historically it happened when the ship was no longer able to offer effective resistance due to:

- being dismasted and unable to prevent a rake

- suffering casualties which caused the captain to believe the fight was pointless

- when the captain considered honour had been satisfied

- when the captain considered that he had no chance of winning the fight or even seriously damaging the enemy

- the ship was sinking or burning

I am sure there were other reasons as well, but the mechanic at present works quite well other than the inability to surrender during a boarding action, that is when you were most likely to surrender so makes no sense at all..

The point is that you might manage to survive a boarding only to be forced to surrender after you are sinking.  It makes no sense to have anti boarding features if the result is the same no matter the outcome.

Sinking and boarding are two different things. The anti boarding features are used whether you are sinking or not. They are used to deter boarding. If you feel they are to be an asset, then utilize them. You may or may not sink, but that has no bearing on the decision to protect yourself being boarded.

Surrendering before being sunk to save your crew is a logical and financial thing to do. The more crew you have left on board and your are about to sink then the question is: Can you really afford to replace the crew? I for one do not give a damn if the enemy gets or doesn't get a kill if I surrender. I do give a damn about how much of my crew can be saved.
