angriff Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 There is not very many light ships sailing in this game. There is a mad rush to get into a Victory and many battles if you dont have a Constitution than you best not be in the fight. Reality that small ships were a plenty in real but there is not a mechanism for their use in this game. Those ships at or Below the Frigate are just fluff
_Masterviolin Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 I don't agree. I love the Surprise and still sail it all the time. The Mercury's a fun hot rod, and I still have my Fine Snow as a relic of the early days grinding around Mosquito Cay. Sure, it's cooler to squirt around in a big ol frigate or a ship of the line, but I don't think the community as a whole dislikes and never uses anything lower than a frigate; nor are they all obsessed on getting a slow, unmanuverable and expensive ship of the line as soon as possible.
Mrdoomed Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Alot of the port battle only crowds go for biggest ships but many players use small ships. Nobody in my clan uses anything other than small ships and only use connies if being harassed at a port. Rattlesnake and suprise are our favorite.
Sire Trinkof Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 (edited) Rattlesnake, surprise, renommée are the most used ships in our clan.... And probably the best all around ship as you can escape from anything, while packing decent firepower, and be able to attack and defeat any 5 th rate cruising alone (1vs1), and even take down SOL in group... Honestly I do not even see the point of sailing stronger ships, but that is a personal taste. Edit : regarding perks they fall in the frigate category, not light ship. Hethwill, the Red Duke Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 You can't hope to defend a schooner trader from a schooner on a frigate. You can't interdict a brig model on a frigate. You cannot intercept trade on a frigate. This has been proven many times to the dismay of the "bigger the better" captains.
Enraged Ewok Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Rattlesnake is probably my most used ship at this point, given how much time I've spent sailing on my own. It's pretty much the most reliable ship when it comes to escaping from even most well rounded counter-gank fleets.
Elric Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Given the number of shallow ports, light ships are critical. They are the only way of attacking or defending half the ports.
Sir Cloudsley-Shovell Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 The Essex is possibly the best ship in the game!It handles well, has speed and can pack a punch at the same time as taking hits!Craft one and apply the correct Upgrades and she is a Vessel to be reckoned with!
Jean Ribault Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 +1 for the Essex, but you start to really chomp at the bit with turn rate. The Mercury is the cat's meow in the smaller ships, 135 crew.

I also have a soft spot for the Essex as a good all around ship, with a gorgeous look. it only lack the ability to escape at will like the surprise, and I do not use it anymore sadly, speed and escape capability being so critical when in small group.
Prater Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Thankfully fishing and shipwrecks have added a reason to sail the Lynx. Saturday night, I teamed up with a British Snow while I was in my Lynx and we caught a French Player Constitution. We got him down to 130 crew before he did his sail rep and started to run away. We got his sails down again at the end and were starting to catch him but time ran out. If there wasn't a time limit we would have captured him. 2
Neverdead Ned Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 If you're not using mixed types of ships in PB's then you're not using ships to their best advantage but you'll probably get bored pretty quickly.
VonVolks Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 (edited) Small ships are great. I echo the above. My faves list: Mercury, Niagara (Merc on steroids), Rattlesnake, and my fave 'bigger' ship, the Bel Poule. Honourable mention for the Snow, as I used them a lot back int he day. In fact I haven't gotten on with any of the bigger ships and dont really have a desire to sail them. I'm looking for an alternative to the Bel Poule to try so might build me an Essex! I'm hoping for another top end frigate to come out to increase the options..... Edited July 19, 2016 by VonVolks
squedage Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 well they are coming out with a new frigate that is more tanky then the current 1 but has lower carros and looks more geared to be a long cannon ship Santa Cecilia rumor is due this month 2
Sir Texas Sir Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 While I'm only Master Com right now and recently got my Surprise. I'll be honest even when I level up I'll prob stay in the Frigates as it's more style of play as a Privateer. BIG SLOW SHIPS are a bore to me. 3
squedage Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 i just wish they would give more love to 5th rate and down other then the magic 3 that always see play (rattlesnake, trinco, merc) that would be great
Prater Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 What kind of boosts are you talking about? I guess actual manual sails would be a good one. Granted, you can use manual sails on fore-and-aft ships but they aren't used in the same way and a lot of times people think the manual sails are helping them it is only faulty perception. 1
Domox Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I would love to see more 6-7 rates for commerce, fishing, patrol, raiding. But until there is more reason to sail them besides PB and novelty, I'm afraid we won't see it. :[

Only doable in a lynx Patch for port battle will introduce hostility level in some area, done by smuggling specific goods.... And chasing smuggler is much easier in light ships. I have done very few PB, and see it as a very small portion of the game, screening for fleet going to PB can be far more enjoyable, even of less rewarding. 1

Prater Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 315 crew 12 and 9 lbers 2 bow, 2 stern chasers. The stern chasers are positioned on the deck so when it takes stern damage the chasers wont be submerged. I think my Oak gold speed goes 11.8 knots in battle but I could be remembering wrong. She's definitely not a light ship, let alone a light frigate when comparing to other frigates in game. She would be a medium frigate, larger than the Surprise, Renomee and Cerberus. 1
VonVolks Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 (edited) Thanks Prater, sounds great! I cant wait to try her out. I've been looking for an alternative to my beloved Bel Poule and something with bow chasers will be fantastic, as I like the odd bit of PVP. Any idea on release time for her and how she will be craftable? Edited July 22, 2016 by VonVolks
