Æthlstan Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 (edited) Safehold is the name of a series written by David Weber. A very good read, with lots of really interesting and fun thought experiments with naval warfare. Thats all I am going to say on the subject, as I dont want to spoil anything Here is the synopsis from the author's page http://www.davidweber.net/books/43-off-armageddon-reef.html Humanity pushed its way to the stars - and encountered the Gbaba, a ruthless alien race that nearly wiped us out. Earth and her colonies are now smoldering ruins, and the few survivors have fled to distant, Earth-like Safehold, to try to rebuild. But the Gbaba can detect the emissions of an industrial civilization, so the human rulers of Safehold have taken extraordinary measures: with mind control and hidden high technology, they've built a religion in which every Safeholdian believes, a religion designed to keep Safehold society medieval forever. 800 years pass. In a hidden chamber on Safehold, an android from the far human past awakens. This “rebirth” was set in motion centuries before, by a faction that opposed shackling humanity with a concocted religion. Via automated recordings, “Nimue” - or, rather, the android with the memories of Lieutenant Commander Nimue Alban - is told her fate: she will emerge into Safeholdian society, suitably disguised, and begin the process of provoking the technological progress which the Church of God Awaiting has worked for centuries to prevent. Nothing about this will be easy. To better deal with a medieval society, “Nimue” takes a new gender and a new name, “Merlin.” His formidable powers and access to caches of hidden high technology will need to be carefully concealed. And he'll need to find a base of operations, a Safeholdian country that's just a little more freewheeling, a little less orthodox, a little more open to the new. And thus Merlin comes to Charis, a mid-sized kingdom with a talent for naval warfare. He plans to make the acquaintance of King Haarahld and Crown Prince Cayleb, and maybe, just maybe, kick off a new era of invention. Which is bound to draw the attention of the Church…and, inevitably, lead to war. It's going to be a long, long process. And it's going to be the can't-miss SF epic of the decade. If you have read the series and would like to talk spoilers, please write what book you are on (so people know if they are as far as you,) then put the spoiler in a spoiler box Edited July 14, 2016 by Æthlstan

balticsailor Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I am just reading the complet series. Also i started with then two news books befor i found out it is a complete series. I just finished a mighty fortress, also most of the books are split in two for the translation so it is book nr. 9/10 of the series... . I have to say i realy enoy the series sofar even if the pace is some times a bit slow and it has a few lengthly parts. But it is a interessting mix of old technics and scifi in a new world with it is own characteristics.
Destraex Posted July 17, 2016 Posted July 17, 2016 I read 6 books or so but it drags on for so long I gave it a rest and went to Aubrey maturin and now Thomas cochranes autobiography - life of a seaman. I will head back to the series one day. It is a good read.
Enraged Ewok Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 The worst part of the series is the long wait between books 1
