I was kind of thinking there is a training option where the time is unlimited.   Your just like in other games working on your skills

I still think a proper custom mode would be perfect for that. Customize you and your opponent armies, select map and play style, make the time limit as long as you want and just practice away.

Today I was frustrated.    I outflanked them on the right and the left and was crushing the federal center.  One of my best strategies and as I was enveloping them the battle ends.   I know no concept in warfare where a battle just ends in the midst of combat and then doesn't allow you to resume it with the armies in their positions.    It's like somebody called a start over.  I'd have serious reservations about buying the game in it's final version if it stays this way.   I think most people want to finish out the battle,  especially if your playing a continuous battle over the three days.  In my opinion this needs to be fixed or at a bare minimum give you options to resume or add time.

The time will extend considerably if there is either a contested VP, or there are units in melee. If you aren't fighting over a VP, what you can do is order a unit to charge. They don't even have to make it to melee range, just the act of pressing the charge button delays the end of the battle. If you can chain together two or three charges, you can buy yourself a lot of time. Not perfect, but it's the best we have right now.

In addition the reverse is also true. As the Union you can end the battle close to on time by pushing back the Rebs for a while , even if you get routed soon afterwards. No matter, as the VP's are uncontested and the game ends.

As it should if you have accomplished the mission of delaying them and pushing them well back from the key points to be held. A rout might well precede a lull as the Confederates regroup to resume the advance.  The charge  (though it should be somewhat near the enemey) and getting near VP points are sufficient tools for extending the fight.
