 Hello fellow captains,

I recently got command of my first Constitution, wich is also my first ship that has a restricted gun deck.

Now i'm not complaining about this or anything, but it just seems odd to me that the heaviest cannons (42 pound carronades) can be mounted on the weather deck, while i can only mount 18 pound cannons on the gun deck. Can anybody tell me why this is?

It just seam illogical to me. Having the heavier guns on the weather deck means that the ship is more likely to roll (the center of mass is higher up). It would also seem logical that carronades would be mounted on a lower deck where they are more likely to be able to hit a smaller ship at close range (wich is what carronades are made for)

Carronades are actually a lot lighter than cannons, that is why seeing carronades on weather decks of ships is not unusual as it allows for a much larger broadside weight without actually increasing the total tonnage of the cannons themselves(and carronades).

ps: constitution can carry 24pd cannons on her gun deck.

Okay, that is actually alot lighter than i expected.

does the weight of cannons actually have an impact on our speed in-game?

Yes guns do effect the speed.    To check I find it easiest to toggle back and forth placing the guns in the ship gun port and taking them out and see how much the speed changes.

As with the second point - of carronades being mounted on lower decks, this tended to happen only to smaller or older frigates that needed a bigger broadside to remain competitive (HMS Glatton, an armed merchantman with a short-lived full carronade armament is the glaring exception). Differences in carriage design meant that lower deck carronades either had to limit their size (going against the point of a carronade armament) or be limited to only firing square broadsides.

The game does a pretty good job of matching ships and gun decks to the right cannons and carronades, and the exceptions tend to be for perfectly fair gameplay or historical reasons.
