VonBarb Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 So some people have been asking for options to customise the appearance of ships. One relatively easy way to offer limited but interesting options would be to create different hard-coded "skins" to choose from for each ship. Some ship types currently in game are already using this method (3rd rate and Bellona, Brig and NavyBrig...) Historically many ships used different paint shcemes during their lifetime (the Victory was at one point black-and-white, and a quick google search will find several representations of the Essex in the gold-and-black livery) and why it may not be entirely realistic for some ships (Santissima was launched and sank in red) it would add some visual variety as well as make ship identification a little more challenging in some cases. It would also allow players to recreate historical ships that are very similar to the types already in the game and that will most likely never get added for lack of originality. I'm thinking of French players wanting to sail the Renard or Recouvrance, that are essentually the Cutter and Privateer in different liveries. So my proposal is to have for each ship : One historical livery (what we have right now), One generic "18th-Century" Gold-and-Black livery, and One generic "19th-Century" Black-and-White" livery. Thoughts ? 4
Chimera Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 As long as I won't have to see pink ships and manga-tattoos on the ship is don't mind. If you make it completely customizable I'm afraid we will see ships sailing around that just don't look like 1750 ;-) 4
VonBarb Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 That is something I'm also afraid of There could also be a more "Baroque" or "National Colours" option closer to what was customary in the late 17th / early 18th , like we have on the Renomee, for those with a taste for colorful patriotic finishes, while avoiding the "Naruto-kemon Black Pearl of Bright Orange Death" effect
mirror452 Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 (edited) There was once talk about ship costumization, so it could actually come sooner or later. However it was talked about in the context of "Premium"-content, so as far as I know devs consider this to be paid with RL money IF they cannot sustain the game with the normal sales. EDIT: There was btw also talk about if Exceptional ships will maybe look more beautiful than lower quality ships one day Edited May 28, 2016 by mirror452
Kanay Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 What i's like to see is only the wood tint of the ships possible to be modified a bit, like when using contrast/ gamma/ saturation on a picture , all woods don't have the same exact color in real life, plus time at seas + salt etc will make them different too. Having a simple sliders for changing contrast/luminosity/gamme/ saturation of the wood color will not turn the game into a flashy pink ships, as long as the possible values are kept inside a certain range allowed to keep this inside some acceptable color tints. For the Dev's they need to apply in game a kind of filter on the visible wood parts of the ships, for the hull , maybe for masts too and can be done for sails at some degree and all ships while being similar models will end up with different looks and make them more uniques, this at what i think will be a very little cost in performances as there is no new textures of wood to do, just filters applied, but i might be wrong. Will give things like this ( done in less than 5mn just to illustrate the idea) : No color was applied or really modified, only contrast , luminosity and gamma filters were modified on the wood part. As a result the combinations of wood tints will be huge and we will probably not see 2 exact same ships in the seas, for US ships painted in black and white .. well ... need more ideas 3
Cpt Blackthorne Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Kanay, I like the idea, however it would just be easier to set a color scheme to each wood type in the game. About personalizing of colors, I simply like it to be a select color scale...maybe only deep colors of the times. Simply exclude the wild brights, neons and pastels. These ships are our only characters images. Every game today allows for amazingly detailed customization. For us not to customize our only in-game image is a bit behind the times. I expect it will come soon if people pay attention to the Vote threads...
Kanay Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Pre-defined color schemes can do but might be limited in choices in the end, they can even do different base color/textures for each wood type then apply my solution, i believe it will offer a wide variety of tints once you combine a few different filters, making ships really unique with all tints combinations allowed, i think, at least for those who have wood parts visible ( outside masts and sails where something can be done too to make them look like older or more used for sails ). For ships painted like for example a Cerberus i would really like to see a non painted full wood version added in game and let the players decided if they want the version we have now or a non painted wood version similar to some other wooden ships like the frigate and then apply same filters as suggested on the wood version to have different tints. This will do also for the US ships painted in white and black, while not using the historical colors ( that make no sense when they are under another Nation flag anyway ) it would look still ok from my point of view, add diversity to the game instead of clones we have now and clones we will still get if it's only a pre defined color or textures allowed... and will love to get my Essex in a wood scheme color
OTMatt Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 Mirones made an interesting suggestion: I was thinking every ship was unpainted by default Devs can create a preset patterns for each ship (Such as Bellona Example) Then once the pattern is chosen players have the option of choosing two color schemes that do not have to be historically in line with the nations color scheme but must be a color that is already in the game. Two tone paint schemes can be free but three tone paint schemes can be sold as a shop item to help fund the developers.
VonBarb Posted May 28, 2016 Author Posted May 28, 2016 That would be an interesting idea. Having to purchase customisation options from the game shop is something I had hoped would not happen, but in this day and age it does make sense, especially if moey to support development becomes an issue.

I totaly agree.

Mamen Posted May 30, 2016 Posted May 30, 2016 I would def. give a go for every nation unique ship paintings for each ship class (would be very refreshing to see some variety of ships during for example ingers/constis only battle on both sides)
Marques Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Something like this with blue, I still believe that to many colors would be worse, but blue on top suit very good and it is historical as well... See this blue modification, in this way they still keep the main color for his faction, red, orange, white or yellow...etc ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Edited by Marques, 24 July 2016 - 07:34 PM
Marques Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 (edited) One suggestion could be as player you can only choose one customization for free. Only the faction inner shade. If some player wants another color, he should get it by capture. It means you can not pick out every color. I hope the Devs could make this changes in customization. Changes in Flags and little color for ships would be nice. Thank you. Marques. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edited July 28, 2016 by Marques
