Eyeless_Camper Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 So, i was thinking here (Sounds weird me thinking ). What kind of ship types would be effective against what ship types ingame? For example i have an american friend who wants to run the Constitution and since im Swedish im gonna run a Swedish ship ofcourse. What would be an effective ship type against a heavy frigate like the Constitution? Similarly i wonder what would be effective against Ships of the line and against smaller ships aswell.
maturin Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 The whole point of Constitution is that she can outfight anything she can't outrun. You'd be best of hunting her down in two medium frigates. And nothing is effective against ships of the line except others of their class.

Captain_Wick Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 Alot will depend on the Captain of the vessel also.
Olk Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 And nothing is effective against ships of the line except others of their class. shallow water 1
Eyeless_Camper Posted August 15, 2014 Author Posted August 15, 2014 Well, that makes sense. Seems like ill be running Ships of the line to avoid him bumping me all the time.
Harry White Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 Will running to shallow water in this game work? will there be reefs and slowly depressing land so the smaller the ship the further in u can go?
maturin Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 I'll be pissed off if there isn't. However, most of the world's coasts are within cannon shot of 20ft deep water, where any sailing ship can go.
Bergoo Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 I'll be pissed off if there isn't. However, most of the world's coasts are within cannon shot of 20ft deep water, where any sailing ship can go. ^this. I don't believe shallow waters should provide any sort of real advantage, unless perhaps too keep outside boarding range. A bigger ship is going to have bigger cannons, and hence, be able to fire at the smaller ship.
maturin Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 It's rivers and harbors that will make the real difference. Most estuaries and Maine-like coastline will be chock full of places where large vessels can't get to. Ideally, coastal areas will be full of ledges and shoals. So while larger warships can pass through, they will be forced to navigate to avoid running aground. That will slow them down while the little sloop glides over all. 1
BrutishVulgarian Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 I think it will be easy to trick big ships into running aground, if you know your home waters. It's very easy to get too focused on what your shooting at and not even pay attention to visible land. Or maybe it will be easy to trick just me, I should stick to blue water sailing.
Eyeless_Camper Posted August 16, 2014 Author Posted August 16, 2014 What would be the best against a heavy frigate? a 1st class or maybe 3-4th class SoL?
BungeeLemming Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Well the best match for a heavy Frigate is a heavy frigate. Theres a german phrase we say for your example frigate vs 1st rate. "mit kanonen auf spatzen schießen" wich means literally "shooting sparrows with a cannon". You dont need a lineship to bring down a heavy frigate. Also a good captain in a smaller frigate can abuse the manueverability and cripple the enemy with raking fire. Killing men and guns and finally sink or capture the ship. Counter a frigate with the same kind of ship or go with a Razee. Razees are downgraded and modified lineships. Old 64 gunners for example wich reduced the guncount a lot to improve sailing. remove quarterdeck or/ and the back of the ship. Still on the main deck can be mounted big sized cannons.
TheMarineGamer Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Will running to shallow water in this game work? will there be reefs and slowly depressing land so the smaller the ship the further in u can go? that would be litterally fucking amazing having the crew to check how shallow and the contents of the sea floor would be so cool it would add a bit more of a challenge to sailing
Destraex Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 i agree. Remembering to set a sailor to sound every x amount of time would be great. But have some effect on efficiency.
