Hi Folks and yacktars,

I think that the mechanics of the marines have to be reworked, since the last patch forcing us to fight in line within pistol range. I suggest that marines and crew assignt to boarding will start to fire there muskets within close range and will do crew damage over time, at least maybe only to the crew engaged in sailing on the other ship. Also the musket an pistol upgrade get some use then.

For performance reasons, the could be 2 or 3 placeholders on each ship for marines.

It is just not realistic, that the gunned crew and the marines wait till boarding to start fighting.

Cheers

Agreed if we will be able to craft those upgrades, please do not turn NA in a "gear farming" MMO.

I agree.

Marines should mandatory in some navies, with no choice. For example Royal Navy standard Marine company of 48 for a 5th rate.

Others should have the opportunity to request them ( pay for them ). Others should be able to find some mercenary companies or naval infantry ( they are not age of sail marines ).

A lot can be done with the Human Upgrades.

Disagree… ye cannot craft people. It takes way too long to raise them

Marines yes Boarders no unless you have Boarding prep on.. if you dont have Prep on they are working the  gun decks

No. They are protecting the gun crews - marines were posted at each access stairs to the gun decks to keep boarders off and allow the gun crews to keep shooting - and picking targets in the enemy deck while stationed at the rigging.

Not craft... drill :D

I support. I mean it really shouldn't even require boarding mode to have crew fire their muskets. Or maybe empire total war spoiled me in that kind of fun.

If only we had crew animations.

What? Boarders didn't pick up their cutlass and pistols until they were about to board.. ie Boarding prep.. otherwise they were part of the Sailing and gun crews... There is no one to protect the gun crews from until a boarding action starts. Standing around with Muskets they would just be in the way of the gun crews and powder monkeys

You have to realize that it is a huge difference between a "marine" and a "boarder".

This is a marine: LINK

This is a "boarder", i.e. a normal sailor:

b86b56e63b915a7c63fcc23fe13e5eccd8dc490a

The marine's primary combat duty onboard the ship is to protect the ship against boarding enemies and sharpshooters, and to board the enemy ship if required.

The sailor's primary duty is to man the rigging, cannons, etc, and during combat he can take to arms like muskets, pistols, clubs, pikes, swords, axes, knifes, etc. when being boarded/firing between the ships and having to defend the ship, or when being ordered into a boarding party to assist the marines in taking the enemy ship.

TLDR: The marines and sailors have very different jobs. The marine is a naval infantryman, and the sailor runs the ship.

Yes and? I am saying Boarders (ie sailors assigned to board another ship) Would Not be using their boarding weapons to shoot at a ship until ordered to prepare to board... Until that time they would be doing normal sailor combat duties.. Sails and guns....   SO you are saying exactly what I said.

Except the primary force during a boarding action was the crew... the Marines were just to small a number to be teh only people boarding

Agreed regarding the need to give Marines something to do when ships are at the oft-quoted "pistol shot" range, but are not yet actively engaged in a boarding action.

Last night I decided to sail a capped Traders Cutter into KPR harbor. I got caught out by a Santi, Connie, Surprise and something else. Very nearly escaped by sailing directly alongside and beneath the guns of the Connie's windward bow. In real life, Marines would've run over to the rail and shot my crew to death. In game currently, I was literally a fraction of a second away from the escape timer running out. Only a "by any means necessary" broadside from the Surprise (that also hit the Connie) was able to keep me tagged.

This sounds really good to me but would asking for morale in normal combat and an addition of a sharpshooters upgrade module be too much to ask as an additional something for these suggestions?

that is not a boarder!!!! this is a sailor "in the chains swinging the lead" he is taking soundings with a lead line!!!!......  however you are right that boarding actions were conducted by the sailors themselves... all naval vessels carried marines... ( i think marines mod should go the way of the dodo) a portion of your ships company should always be comprised of a party of marines, who should be firing their muskets from the bullwarks and tops at enemy vessels... also why should marines give a gunnery penalty in the royal navy certain guns were always manned by marines
