The Quality is fine actually.. The numbers on a ship are just silly.....   Normal Marines numbers on a 4th Rate was around had roughly 400 crew and 100 Marines/soldiers... But in here Gold Marines would have 250?

Set Marines numbers as set number based on ship class...  not % crew...  Just an idea...

if you dont want to have 250 marines.. then dont put gold marines on it.. if you want like 100 marines you will have to use comon marines or something

its better and easier how its now..

Maybe you are being misguided  by the "gold fever" ,marines can be the best designed upgrade of the game, they are more of a decission than any other being the only one where color only shows relative scarceness, and does  not tag the better choose.

No You should be able to have less marines that are just as good in combat bonuses... That is my point.., you shouldnt have to use half your crew for Quality

I think I understand your point , you want gold marines consedered a kind of "navy seals commando" and grey marines green conscript...

on the opposite I prefer consider  the combat bonuses coming from the tactics allowed by so high % crew being marines.

It is just so unrealisct... no commander would have 1/2 teh crew of a Ship of the Line Marines . it just is odd to say the least.. War ships didn't plan on boarding actions as their main attack function.. it is what you did IF you had a chance to. At least in SOL vs SOL battles until someone was dismasted or you just got tangled up.

Heck give us the option to set number of Marines up to the cuirrent max with no loses in Quality

A commander wouldn't have 1/2 crew marines on a SoL....

but maybe a commander of a navybrig that wants to board a bigger ship would do that ?

Or a pirate frigate ?

Or heck even a frigate squadron with the goal of capturing a running pirate ?

The game gives you choices, that's all.

Quality has nothing to do with how good they could or should be, only the % of the crew that will be marines. Every quality of marines has the same stats except one number, the % of crew.

Does it mess with having a full gold upgrade build on a ship if you don't want to go with pure boarding, sure, but if you want fewer marines, just use a lower quality.

By equipping marines you decide which % of crew is sailors and which % of crew is marines. It somewhat replicates the decision of hiring a bigger marine complement. Captains choice basically

the quality of marines its all the same

eventually this upgrade will be disbanded and replaced by just hiring marines in port (not a promise but it might happen0

if we hired them in port does that mean we still lose crew? do i lose them if they die in battle or do they just respawn like crew

Actually privateers (not the specific ship in this game, but ships used for that purpose) were outfitted in exactly this way, with as many extra crewmen as they could stuff on their ship, with the express intention of using those extra men to board and capture a prize, and then be able to sail the prize back to port.

In my mind the Marines upgrade combined with a Crew Space build and Extra Hammocks is exactly in line with that kind of approach.

EDIT: and as regards actual warships, boarding actions were in fact one of the only ways to achieve a decisive outcome (i.e. win or loss). Just as in Naval Action, in real life, captains would try to escape once they were heavily damaged, leading to inconclusive outcomes. Great efforts were made to effect a boarding to prevent that from happening.

To the extent the Marines upgrade makes the warship potentially less effective (because you've got to toggle crew focus more), using them without degrading your ships overall performance is a mark of skill. I appreciate those touches in the game.

What doesn't make sense is that marines don't die first, but die exactly in relation to the crew. If you have common marines, for every 5 losses you lose 1 marine.

Doesn't make sense. Why would I use my regular sailors that can actually man the other stations as well when I have expendable marines?

I'm just wondering how to get Marines? As I understand you can't craft them. But I have rarely seen them in the shop as an upgrade, but only Grey or green. How do I get better Marines Upgrades?

Some upgrades f.e. Powder Monkeys or Marines can only be obtained by dropping, this makes them quiet expensive.

IRL specific sailors were detailed as boarders and led by naval officers not necessarily marines. Marines were also held back to provide covering musket fire. So I am not sure that higher marines casualties was a given in a boarding action.

From a game play perspective I can see your point though.

being extremely lucky and get them as drop.

From what they are dropping?

From my experience they only drop at full moon and from ships that are built by virgin mermaids...

To be serious: I think you can get them from higher rank missions and port battles.

Hm, I would really prefer that :P

But your serious Explanation makes sense. Thank you for letting me know. :)
