Game is based ~1690-~1820. And seeing as ships of the 1800s can be sailing with ships of the 1690s, I'd wager the game is set in 1820.

Another way to date the game is the United States has an official navy. Something we/they really didn't have until about 1795 or so. So the game must be after that. Then, too, you could perhaps closer date the game based on the stars of the US flag.

No precise date. The game takes place "during the Age of Sail" between late 17th and early 19th century.

Thus it'd be useless to ask for historical accuracy about some details such as flags.

There are only choices from the devs right now and maybe someday options to choose your fav' flag...

This is actually a case for a number of the flags, but not with a such a (in comparison) minor detail as the addition of the Irish flag.

For example, depending on the date, the current Spanish flag could/should be replaced with either the Flag of Burgundy (until ~1700) or Flag of Castile [and Leon]

Flag of Burgundy: spanflag.jpg

Flag of Castille: 650px-Flag_of_Castile_and_Le%C3%B3n.svg.

Similarly with France, where again depending on the time the flag would not be the Tri-colour but rather any number of flags with golden fleur-de-lis upon either a white or blue field.

Example: fr~mr2.gif

It my simply be that the ones currently in use are more identifiable. Who knows. Maybe we may see these flags later in development as choices.(Or perhaps Faction leaders will be able to decide which version of a faction's flag to fly?)

USS Constitution is of 1812. At that time the United Provinces was after a coup-d'etat already a self-proclaimed independent kingdom.

Maybe the fit she can carry or some part of her design...But Constitution was launched 1797.

Even then it was a pseudo-republic, called Batavian Republic, under the rule of King Louis Bonaparte. It had a distinctively different flag then.
