Fluffy Fishy Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 For a few weeks now the Cannons have had an impact on the ship speed but I am wondering why the designers didn't give each ship a slight boost to speed to compensate for the new numbers. I like that the game has an impact for cannon usage but I feel like the implementation is a little bit poorly thought out, why did all ships not get a slight boost to speed to compensate for the new impacts? The way it has been put into the mechanics has just become an unnecessary nerf of all ships. This Impact has meant that the game has become slightly more time consuming which can already be a problem for player retention. Again I like to stress that I really like the update and how it works on cannons but just find it in need of a second look.
Galileus Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 If I am not mistaken, the cannons impact on speed was there (or was supposed to be there) for a long time, but it was fleshed out and better represented in last patches. If I am mistaken, someone will correct me. 4

OlavDeng2 Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 The cannons effecting speed has been here since at least early access release, However since untill recently there were no numbers representing the loss of speed with cannons mounted no one or almost no one noticed. 3

Cannons had an impact before, but displayed speeds in port were not adjusting. This appears to be mostly a perception issue. 2
maturin Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Slightly off-topic: Anyone know how many speed upgrades you need to get a Trinc to 13 kts at best point of sail?
Enraged Ewok Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 I think some ships did get a speed nerf. From Jodgi's most current speed trials, the Trincomalee tops out around 11.8 base speed. On the one hand it makes me happy because now my Essex has a good chance of catching and capturing/sinking one if I'm the better sailor, but at the same time, I think it should be a fair bit faster than it is (going for historical accuracy here).
maturin Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 I don't know what's going on with speeds. Historically both Trinc and Belle Poule could make around 13 kts, and Essex would likely be in that neighborhood as well. Cerberus might have matched that, while Surprise was never recorded doing better than 11. I assume that a Fir Trinc with copper plating and speed trim will reach 13 kts? Or higher?

From some rough math assuming exceptional built in speed, copper plating, and speed trim (7.5% speed increase) a teak/oak Trinc will make around 12.65 knts. Fir would bump that up to about 12.98.
Hethwill, the Red Duke Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Just a heads up. Upgrades are not cumulative. They work over the basic values.

Cannons have always affected speed, it just didn't show up on your ships information screen until now.
Prater Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 I actually wish it didn't show up like before. Those who tinker could find the results they want that very few others know about. What happened a few patches ago was this: the speed now shows, and they pretty much nearly doubled the weight of all cannons/carronades. I think some ships did get a speed nerf. Jodgi's speed is for an unarmed ship. 11.8 is what, an all carronade trinc with 4lb long chasers?
jodgi Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 (edited) Jodgi's speed is for an unarmed ship. 11.8 is what, an all carronade trinc with 4lb long chasers? I actually go for all longs, Since PVP matters and nothing matters for PVE. I have a perfect trinco without slap-on speed trim. Gonna go check GUI speed... K. fir trinco with golden built-in speed + copper is listed at 12.86. Slap-on trim should bump it over 13, but it gets silly. You then have a reno killer, but that's pretty much it.
