Admiral_Of_The_Fleet Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Mary Celeste Year of disappearance: 1872 Mary Celeste is known as 'the greatest maritime mystery of all time' as she didn't disappear, but her crew and passengers did. She was a merchant 'ghost' ship spotted by a Canadian brigantine on December 4, 1872, unmanned, sailing off the Azores in seaworthy condition. Her finders determined she had already been at sea for a month and had over six months' worth of food and water on board. The mysterious part was that her cargo was virtually untouched and the personal belongings of passengers and crew were still in place, including valuables. There are many explanations that attempt to explain what happened. Some have suggested the crew aboard Mary Celeste could have been murdered and thrown overboard by Ottoman pirates, who frequently sailed the area. However, British officials dismissed any suggestion of piracy or foul play as there were no signs of violence. One of the most prevalent and plausible theories to date suggests that the crew perished after embarking on a lifeboat, fearing the ship's cargo may have been about to explode as they were transporting barrels of alcohol.
ObiQuiet Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 (Before the rumors begin to to spread, the true story is being unveiled here: http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/12191-now-revealed-the-na-geo-societys-research-vessel-the-mary-celeste/?fromsearch=1 I will submit an update to my earlier report soon, as new artifacts have been found.)
Twig Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 The Mary Celeste is actually also called the: "Doomed Ship"Earlier years:Even before the ship got found abandoned, the first captain died on their maiden voyage 1861. Not even 48 hours after the ship got official registered. Later there were a lot of accidentals on board. In 1867 the ship stranded near the new scottish coast. It got repaired, was sold and stranded on the same place again. At this time the ship was named: "Amazon".After that it got the name: Mary CelesteThe end of the Mary Celeste:1884, The Mary Celeste accrued a reef in west-india and sunk. The Shipowner got under the suspicion of insurance fraud, the first mate go insane and the second mate commited suicide...If that is not something for a ghost-story... Than I don't know
Baron Quertier Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 (edited) The Mary Celeste is a fascinating case, another nautical mystery, one that I find even more intriguing is the story of the Ourang Medan. Little bit more modern as compared to the Mary Cileste but still a chilling case. From this ship came one of the most disturbing SOS signals of all time that apparently went : "All officers including captain are dead, lying in chartroom and bridge. Possibly whole crew dead.” This communication was followed by a burst of indecipherable Morse code, then a final, grim message: “I die.” This cryptic proclamation was followed by tomb-like silence. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ourang_Medan There's the Wikipedia link, I'm sure there are much more better sites for more accurate or reliable information. Or maybe some of our Dutch friends might know more about her, she being a Dutch merchantman. Edited April 14, 2016 by Morey
