Renommee ?

I love the look of that ship, cant crew her yet, 2 more ranks, is she any good vs the other frigates in her class in AI missions? Seems fast but other frigates outgun her....tnx in advance

she is really fast, her armor isn't thick, but she will bounce alot of shots if you angle it right

Renommee has brilliant speed qualities, and fairly decent armor qualities. However, she is fairly under-armed, and really won't stand a fight against a 38 (Frigate, Belle, etc) unless you handle her well. If you like playing the "range game", then I don't recommend her. To really kick ass in the Renommee against fellow frigates, you definitely need to make sure to master tacking- Renommee, in my opinion is designed to out-maneuver/out-run her opponents to make up for her armor/armament, and this should be kept in mind! To put it simply, Renommee will not do well in a broadside-broadside engagement with other frigates, and can't tolerate much of a beating at all but is certainly a fast ship.

 

I slightly prefer the Surprise to the Renommee, as the Surprise has a bit more punch with extra weather deck armament, and can be more useful against 38s.(Surprise has the same crew rating, by the way.) Surprise is still a capable and fast ship, though of course the Ren holds the title without doubt in speed. Surprise may not be as beautiful, but in my experience with both ships in the past, I've found Surprise to be a bit more capable against opponent frigates and my personal favorite. 

 

Later on, If you're still looking for a capable combatant against other frigates, shoot for Belle. BellePoule is a brilliant ship; a very good mix of armament, armor and speed. She can take a beating and still preform well against her opponents; she can play the range game, or go close quarters without too much of a fuss. I sailed her a while back and had a damn good time. Just saying

I use Renommee with player groups and just hide in the back, if you do that the enemy rarely ever focuses on you. If the battle turns sour you can just use the speed and flee.

She is great vs any AI frigates.  I'm not that great player but have no problem vs Frigate or Belle Poule not mentioning Reno or Sur.  I use long cannons.  Just keep moving and turning, Reno does it really well.  And you can always run away in case you made too many mistakes
