If they change the mechanics of the pirates in the future this could be really important. Why take all of it when you can take enough with no risk of damage or crew losses? It may even be more profitable as if you let traders go after taking your share and have a reputation for it then I'm sure most would actually cooperate. Whereas if you have a reputation for no quarter then they are going to run and fight all the harder.
