Fluffy Fishy Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Should the game add short and cut down cannons, used by all kinds of ships from huge first rates to small traders. I am currently surprised that they aren't in the game already, I would personally like to see the extra choice for players, especially on the larger ships with no access to carronades on their lower decks. I personally wouldn't mind if it was kept simple and only a single short cannon type was added but it would be nice to see a bit more choice for players when it comes to cannons.as a little disclaimer, short cannons aren't carronades they are two very different things
Galileus Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Sure, what role though? What choice? How are they different to what we have now...? 1
Henry d'Esterre Darby Posted March 19, 2016 Posted March 19, 2016 Removed unnecessary poll. Galileus has a good point - what would the role of these cannon be - their advantages and disadvantages compared to what is in game? Were they present in the late 1700's/early 1800's? 1
Fluffy Fishy Posted March 19, 2016 Author Posted March 19, 2016 They were certainly present and actually rather quite common, they offered a slightly easier reload and the ability for a ship to take an ever slightly higher poundage at the expense of some accuracy and slight ease of reload. Short cut cannons make sense for traders to be armed with, due to their smaller footprint and therefore more capacity for carrying cargo. when it comes down to it medium and long guns don't really make much sense, medium to what? carronades are a different kettle of fish. Short cut and short cannons served slightly different purposes but they were fairly similar in size, although I beleive short guns were scaled down and used a slightly lower powder charge where as short cut guns were basically a shorter barrel. When it comes to ships, the royal navy certainly used them frequently throughout the period HMS Victory was armed with some and so was HMS Bellona among other ships. When it comes to the game it offers proper context for medium and long, it also allows for a realistic and larger player choice to how they want to arm their ships with. They could offer a good compromise for the ships unable to arm with carronades.

Compromise between what and what? Sorry to say, but this really starts to look like a under-developed idea based only on "I wanna".
Fluffy Fishy Posted March 20, 2016 Author Posted March 20, 2016 (edited) It's not an I Wanna, it's just one that adds some choice and historical depth. The choice is between different cannon types and the compromise is a cannon that is a little more like carronades than mediums without actually being carronades, they are a go between with slightly less accuracy and range but a lower reload time offering a higher dps at short range and being equipable to the bigger ships. I'm not sure whats wrong with that as a niche Their role is trader armaments and a choice for players to make for a less intense choice between carronades and mediums, currently it's such a huge gulf between the two it looks a bit silly, especially as a gulf that was historically filled by slightly shorter guns.
