As Title Says.

Give Traders the Option to Hire Escort Ships.

Only usable when using a Trader Classed Ship.

And will only Join the Fight when being Attacked.

In Exchange Reduce the Range of Reinforcements around the Ports.

believe me, with the awful IA of the escort, they will be plain useless against a player aggressor

Against a Single Attacker they will likely be useful enough to Buy some Time to Escape at least.

Escort in exchange for Reinforcements ( not reduced but totally off ). Deal ?

Hmm. How About

Reinforcements Off for anyone above 1st Lieutenant to maintain Newbe Protection :P

Escorts only Available to above 1st Lieutenant of course :P

And here is the problem: if you escape (and if you are a trader you are just compelled to escape as fast as you can in order to not get your sails reduced) you and your pursuer are faster than your IA escorts, and they are plain useless. So your idea could work only if they adjust the escort max speed in order to be faster than yours of a couple of knots.

Well to begin with the Idea of Escorts is to allow for Bigger Escort Ships which will basicly Replace the Reinforcement Ships.

These could then simply use Speed Build and be Adjusted so they have Equal Speed to normal Player Ships so they can Keep up with your own Ship.

Problem Solved.
