I think it is bad for RvR games to have combat limits but it is obvious the current BR system for Port Battles and the 25 person limit on combat in general is already in place so apparently Naval Action wants limits of some kind.

I would recommend instead of player limits I would put a BR limit on battles instead. I would also make it low enough so that the servers can support it.

For example just make it simple. For port battles and open sea fights the maximum amount of BR is 5,000. (I am just guessing at the number but it certainly needs to be less than 10,000.

At 5,000 BR you can either bring 10 3rd rates or 125 Cutters.

You can leave the Shallow and Deep Water mechanics in the game so for a Deep Water Port Battle you can Bring either 10 3rd rates or 62 Cerbs. For Shallow Water Port battles make the limit like 2500. Again you can bring a bunch of Cutters or Navy Brigs or some combination there of.

I think this accomplishes a few things.

  • It makes Naval Action make better sense of the BR system, I have no doubt 10 3rd rates are not going to beat 62 Cerbs. Would be interesting to find out though.

  • It allows more players to participate in port battles rather than just those with the highest level ships

  • It negates the Zerg as long as you can bring Max BR to the fight.

  • It is the only compromise I can think of that would work to keep the people bitching about 25 vs 2 fights and still keep RvR integrity.

  • This makes all ships useful for the longevity of the game rather than where we are headed now where everyone just fights in their 1st rates. We may very well find out with a system like this that 62 Cerbs is the best way to fight a port battle.

  • Finally this adds a lot for strategy to the game as to the type of ships brought to the fight vs. the size of the ship. We will never find out how just how well they designed the Snows if eventually they become obsolete never to be seen again because everyone is max level.

Been in several 25 vs 25 on my comp which is definitely not a slouch and I was lagging pretty bad... Playable, but barely. Anything bigger than this I don't think anyone could handle but the top 1% players who always have the latest hardware.

Locking a game to super high tier computer is not a good strategy.. especially for a niche game like this one.

I do like the BR idea though, but I would keep the limit at 25 vs 25, it's already pretty demanding.

Limit at 25 vs. 25 + BR rating? (could work)

The idea of BR rating is nice....

But I guess those boys want the big guns and those massive battles...shame the Privateer/Snows are of no use....

Do a mix of both like people above said.

put a BR rating limit so we are finally done with the army of Man'o war, but still limit the max number of players to 25vs25.

First of all because the server (and most players's PC) won't be able to render more than that. And also because I don't want the swarm of basic cutter to become a viable tactic.

25v25 is likely there for technical reasons so lets ignore thoughts of upping that for a moment.

The BR limit idea is the interesting component and bear in mind that current BR ratings for ships could easily be tweaked to balance it out differently.

What I would like to see is any system that makes using more ship types "viable", currently deep water battles are 3rd Rate and above, if you aren't in those you are a "liability". (This may even experience creep upwards as numbers of larger vessels increase)

Given that Snow/Navy brig is the top end of the Shallow port this renders a huge amount of ship types (including ones that could potentially be added as new ships) pretty much useless with respect to port fights. All those ship types became is a grind buffer to prevent people taking part in the "end game" while they run missions and attack open world fleets desperately trying to reach Flag Captain / Equivalent.

At the same time the "big guys" don't want to have their fun toys shelved so there needs to be some variety to all this. Perhaps make it so Region capitals have a higher BR port fight that the surrounding ports, implying the increased effort a nation would expend in trying to gain their control, you effectively insert an extra tier of port battle.

Alternatively the Admin seemed to be putting forward the idea of "development" level per specific port, depending on how well players delivered what it needed etc. Have it so more developed ports get larger BR fights.

It would let more people get involved in the Port battle side of the game as well as many extra layers of strategy to the mix.
