I think a wind system that accurately reflects prevailing winds would be quite interesting. Ports that are downwind of an enemy would be more prone to attack, and those upwind less. This would add a really fun layer to the game. The wind however would still change direction, if the weather was not "normal" and stormy for instance there would be a good chance the wind would come from a different or even opposite direction. Making difficult to attack ports suddenly easier to attack.

There is room to add indefinite detail the game, however I think this would be relatively simple and have a really fun impact on the game. This is exactly sort of game mechanic we need to help make every day feel as similar.

Here is an image (many others available with a quick search), of the prevailing winds in the Caribbean.

Are you sure that image doesn't display currents?

Im pretty sure, most of the images I looked at showed the same general thing. Either way it does a good job illustrating the idea.

Dynamic (not fully random) weather and currents are things I hope we will see in future releases (as soon as more pressing matters are resolved).

Actually it would be cool if you could use currents to plan faster routes, or had to sail around storms.
