1 - I'm a total newbie to UG: Gettysburg, but a long time avid player of CIvil War games, Total War games (all of them), and especially the tactical battle parts of the TW series.

2 - I'm a lifelong devotee of the Civil War, having grown up in Northern VA and been a history buff all my life

That said - this is an incredible work, a fantastic achievement, and could well become renowned as one of, if not THE, best tactical level battle game of all time.

The graphics are superb, the game play is clear, clean, and simple to grasp and after only a brief (4-5 hours) in game, I'm so completely addicted that I nearly called in sick to work today so I could keep playing.

My question/query/concern here is that at the conclusion of my first full day of battle, the end of July 1, as dark fell and the fighting ended I had masterfully (and playing at the least available difficulty level :-) ) surrounded and trapped a large number of the blue clad devils in Gettysburg with the rest fleeing for their lives to the south. My heroic forces had captured Culp's Hill and installed 4 artillery units on its crest to rain havoc and death down upon my foes.  I looked forward to the coming dawn where my brilliant leadership and courageous forces would bring a glorious victory to the Southern cause.

But when dawn broke, not a single unit bestrode Culp's Hill, there were no trapped (and well nigh helpless) Union forces struggling to survive in Gettysburg, and the overall deployment of both sides bore virtually no resemblance to the way it was as the night had fallen.

Did I mess something up, somehow?  It can't be (please!) the way the campaign game is supposed to work, right?  I'm pretty sure that I did something to cause the overnight changes - but would love to have someone clue me in so I can avoid doing it again.

BTW - one final glowing comment - my son and I just finished a 2 day visit to the Gettysburg battleground, taking the self guided auto tour and seeing every area in detail.  This game was made even better as I can see everything on the map mirrored in my memory of what we saw mere weeks ago.  For anyone who's never actually seen Devil's Den or Little Round Top in person, who's never stood where the Confederates began their advance from Seminary Ridge up towards Cemetery Ridge, never looked down from the north on the Union lines along McPherson's Ridge waiting for the oncoming southerners -- if you ever have a chance - go see it.  It boggles the mind.  And it makes a superb game like this even more realistic in the mind.

Hello RH Lee,

Thank you for your very informative feedback. There are battle flow issues that we fix progressively in each weekly patch. So issues like you described, the next battle to feel wrong will get less and less.

I had some similar issues with my recent game as the Confederates. I had a very successful 1st day where I was able to drive the Union troops off the high ground at Cemetery Hill and Culps Hill. I decided to choose the "Crush the Yankee's" scenario to prevent them from regrouping against me. When the battle began, I noticed I had gained Anderson's division from the 3rd Corps but I was missing all the brigades from Heth's division. This was irritating for me because I had held Pettigrew's brigade back to use as a sledgehammer to break the yanks.

The battle itself was incredibly fun, I was only reenforced by Hood's division from 1st Corps while the Union kept getting division's streaming in constantly. The battle seesawed back and forth around the wheatfield and devil's den for most of the morning then once I determined the union troops were exhausted, i made a heavy push up both Round Tops. At the same time I was pushing them off the hills, they made a heavy push against my center and left flank just south of Cemetery Hill and Culp's Hill. It was touch and go for awhile before I was able to get some stabilization to my lines but I managed to hold the hills and stopped the union push at the base of Cemetery Ridge.

So after that scenario, I am thinking I am in pretty good shape. I hold all the good ground and I still have McLaw's and Pickett's divisions yet to arrive  (and maybe Heth's division will show back up?) while the Union is down to only VI Corps left as reenforcements. The rest of them are pretty chewed up with the exception of V Corps.

So I load the next battle up and I am only given one choice. It is a Union counterattack on Seminary Ridge! All my troops have been placed either on Seminary Ridge or north of Gettysburg in the open fields. I was a little frustrated so I stopped playing but I do intend to finish it since it should be a huge challenge to take back all that ground in the condition my army is in after that rough morning on the 2nd day.
