TBH, you should already not be able to capture more then frigate/belle poule imo, because to just take consti and 3th rate is already too easy. We should change them to not capturable. Or we could make captured ship much worse This way a right ship means something and you can still do the easy pvp spam on suprise - belle poule with a good deversity 1
Cmdr Thrudd Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Yeah I'd like to see the bigger ships back in for us to fight, just make them uncapturable. On the PvE server we need some targets to use our big ships against.
Aetrion Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 This is all just the negative consequences from making ships into an item rather than something you need to unlock. Having to make sure NPC never use those ships because otherwise people can "get them cheap" is exactly the kind of thing that would be avoided if ships would be a very expensive one time investment of research and building cost, and the economy was instead based on ship equipment which is lost when you are defeated, rather than replacing the whole ship.

It prevents people from getting too powerful, and it prevents from everyone using only 1st rates. I also think that AI 3rd rates should be taken out of the game... Certainly if the player base is high enough. As for the PVE server... Well, I guess you could put AI big ships in... However it would be abused by people going to the PVE server to farm xp. If you want to fight big ships, go PVP

Realism isn't relevant. Realism was already dragged behind the woodshed and beaten to death with a shovel the second we all decided that battles are the fun part of captaining a ship, not the painful, horrifying and unfortunate part that is likely to claim your life. It prevents people from getting too powerful, and it prevents from everyone using only 1st rates. No it does't, it actually enables people to be too powerful, because power is relative. When everyone is powerful the relative power level in the game evens out. If on the other hand the only way to be powerful is to have a clan feed you money or just grind all day and then some it creates a difference in people's power where some people genuinely do end up being too powerful. As far as everyone only using 1st rates is concerned, that's something that can be solved much more effectively by making sure that every type of ship has some merit than by trying to implement a system where a single type of ship is the definitive most powerful one and not everyone can have it. If using 1st rates is the best thing you can actually do in the game, and the only thing stopping you is a huge wall of grind all that is ultimately accomplished is that everyone who realizes they just don't have a time to get there is going to quit playing. Then everyone is using 1st rates again anyways, so you gained nothing, you only lost players.

You don't bring a 1st rate to a simple brawl... these things are for Port Battles. In the end everyone can have a 1st rate, but noone will use it all the time. Makes the game more interesting even for individual players because you don't sail the same ship over and over again and rather choose the right ship for the purpose. For example, light frigates for smaller brawls and hunting enemy players, frigates and heavier frigates for defense of home waters and bigger brawls, and for intercepting fleets... and SOLs for Port Battles.
Aetrion Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 I would much rather have people be able to dedicate themselves to any type of ship and have just as much of an opportunity to invest in it than have the game set up in a way that treats ships like they are Pokemons.
Mirones Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 first rates are not the ultimated superweapon of the time as people praise them to be. they were nothing but prestige or collectable items to show wich one has the bigger one. more than 750 74guns were build world wide for a reason together with other large 2deckers. First rates are allready expensive they have the histrocial drawbacks there is nothing more to add to it its allread limited by haveing only 1 or even 2 duras compared to the 4 of any frigate. There are quite a few threads about 1st and 2nd rates already, I'm going to lock this one to keep discussions limited to fewer places. 2
