I know at some point they are planned and that they are mainly used for PB's but how much variety should we expect to see in this ship type? Will all ships be able to use mortars or only certain ones?

I would guess we are only getting a certain type of ship that can carry em, like the mortar brig which we had way back in seatrails 1 at some point.

I cant find any films on youtube with them. Strange. I know I participated in some battles were I was nuked with the EXTREMLY OP tactical nukes the mortar brig used at the time. No wonder they removed it. .-)

It should be lousy in fight against other ships but should be extremely valuable in fights against ports and fortresses and such.

It's one of those things where realistically the reason they were lousy against ships is only because they weren't accurate enough to reliably hit a ship before that ship put an end to your shenanigans, but if a ship actually was hit by a bomb it would do absolutely devastating damage.  In games that kind of "Really unlikely but when it happens it's uber powerful" kind of stuff usually causes a lot of frustration because it introduces elements into the game where someone can rely on random chance to overpower actual skill.

I can guarantee they will be in later to counter forts, one thing you have to remember is that if done properly, they will be inaccurate and 99% of the time get destroyed by a 1st rate thus limiting their use to only attacking forts(unlike what they were in sea trials)

Yea, basically the mechanic for them should be such that you have to guess the elevation and then use your spyglass to confirm impacts, so that you can zero in on stationary targets, but you can't effectively target moving objects. The natural motion of the ship should also add a degree of scatter into the fire, so that it needs a big target.

@ The Admins Where does the game stand currently with the implementation of Mortar type vessels? Will there be various hull types other than the "Brig"? Is there an estimated battle rating number established? Crew Level? Do we have any additional information on timing of when they will be coming to the game and/or how players use/aim them?

Thank You.

The mortar Brig way back when had 2 mortars if I remember right and had 7 guns on each side (max 6lbers/12lb carronades).  Crew was like 120.  It was basically a different version of the Brig.

Only a handful of people ever got to sail it.  It was originally way OP.  It could easily take out any ship and massacred the enemy.  I think Conis were sinking from 2 shells.  I only got to use it in a few battles and only after they nerfed the accuracy, from which point it became impossible to use and you couldn't hit a moving target if your life depended on it.  Since at the time you could only progress by damage dealt, they removed it from the lineup because the only way to progress was to use the guns instead of the mortars.  I am kind of surprised it hasn't returned sooner.  We were never able to test it against stationary targets, but I do know that the nerfs made it impossible to hit a moving target.

Edit: looks like I was wrong, the Mortar Brig has 6 ports on each side for cannons.
