Matthias46 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Hello! Reached the Master and Commander and know i am choosing my next ship! Can someone explain me the differences in the ships? Because i think they have the same battle rating but the Surprise seems so much stronger to my noob eyes and i don't see the "hidden" gems of the Renommèe!Thanks
Dalriaden Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Renomee sits lower which always makes you a little hard to hit. The surprise is great but it has a really nasty lean that takes some time to get used to and makes it hard to shoot low ships like the Reno. That said I love my surprise.
Vanguard Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Surprise - More guns and has bow chasers, fastest square rigged ship between beam reach and close hauled. However, rolls and heels a lot making it a less stable gun platform. Renommèe - Fastest ship bar none at best point of sail, hull shape ricochets many shots, very responsive to rudder inputs.
hoarmurath Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Surprise has a lot of guns, bow chasers, 4 stern chasers, and good sailing characteristics upwind for a square rigger (still awful compared to a fore and aft) but it's slow, not very maneuverable, and it lack "stiffness", in extenso, it roll a lot. Renommée is very fast, doesn't roll much, and is fairly maneuverable but it has no bow chasers, don't sail as well as surprise upwind, and have less guns.
Dalriaden Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 but it's slow, not very maneuverable, and it lack "stiffness", in extenso, it roll a lot. Lies and slander sir, lies and slander. 1
Mirones Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Surprise needs to be build out of Teak and no higher to make her shine in sailing performance she is closehauled second fastes frigate after La Renomme Reno has 2 guns more on lower deck but only 4 on top Surprise has 26 +14 2 front and 2 rear the bottom ports are for acces to ruder and were never meant for cannons same as on Brig variants
drogoran Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 from my experience its firepower vs speed 1
Mirones Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 dont forget boobs another reason that speaks for Renomme > Surprise
Will Stryborn Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 Russell Crowe picks the Surprise. He is gladiator and master and commander go with him. 2
The MetaBaron Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 I love the Renommee... but so do I love the Surprise. The Renommee is a joy to sail, when sailed well she is quick, maneuverable, and can ricochet canon balls well. However the Surprise really does have a better armament, and can tank better... this along with bow chasers really make her a great ship. I suggest getting both. They both have their moments.
Ghroznak Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I suggest getting both. They both have their moments. Bah! Stop ruining my wallet! Now I have to get both... and I still can't fully crew the Renomme (hopefully I will after today). I ran into a Surprise in a mission yesterday, while I was in my Cerberus still and my friend was in a Mercury. I came up along side the Surprise at medium range... and ermagherd... she was absolutely shredding me. She was shooting me alternating between throwing single shots at me, then unloading her gun deck, then back to single shots from top deck. It felt like she never had to reload. Cannonballs just kept flying at me. I had to break off and run downwind to get range, then shell her from distance, at which point my friend in the Mercury started taking loads of hits. We did sink her at the end, but she put up a HARD fight That said... when I broke off from the Surprise and it started turning hard around the wind to go for my friend I noticed what people have been saying about the roll. She was heeling very heavily when sailing beam reach and the wind was filling her sails from starboard. I have the redeemable Renomee waiting though. Going to sail that for sure, but witnessing the firepower from the Surprise I have to say it can be very nasty, especially up close. Renommee doesn't seem like a major upgrade from the Cerberus though in terms of firepower. She has the same 13 9 pounders on the gun deck, and only a pair of 6 pounders extra up top. I tried sailing her (undercrewed) with 6 pounders up top, but those are going to be swapped for 18 pounder carronades for close quarters business as the 6 pounders are simply underwhelming... optionally, I will just use the 6 pounders as troll-guns with chains. I suppose the strength of the Renomme is going to be speed and maneuverability. So far I have equipped her with Fine Copper Plating for speed, Fine Lightweight Yards and Rigging and Fine Improved Magazine Access for faster reload. We'll see how she performs when I get my rank and full complement of crew on her.
Bleakbeard Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 What wood would you recommend for a Reno?
The MetaBaron Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 (edited) I can fully crew the next tier up and I still find myself coming back to the Renommee regularly, be careful to not judge a ship by her stats. In PvP brawling or port battles you really want the armor of the Surprise as there will be too many people shooting from too many directions to try and deflect shots, however in PvE or aggressive smaller PvP engagements I still really enjoy the Renommee. Sometimes you need to have the fastest ship in the game (downwind) to chase down... or run from... enemy players. As part of a smaller strike fleet that includes a ship with bow chasers, a Renommee is invaluable. Heck today I was "engaging" an enemy player Cutter for fun, and with manual sail control and an 'optimized rudder' upgrade I was able to out turn it!! Edited February 16, 2016 by The MetaBaron
Prater Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 not very maneuverable Not sure which ship you are talking about, because the consensus is that the Surprise is very maneuverable.
