I many times find in the quick battles that 1 ship in a battle will run away from the combat, turning a 30 minute battle into a 2 hour follow the chicken.  Is there a mechanic that can be put in place to reduce this?  Sailing in battles is fun, but the end battle of 5 ships chasing one is extremely boring.  

 

I remember in beta the game had a shrinking map as either ships were destroyed or as the timer ticked down, forcing ships to fight rather than retreat.  Which seemed to solve this problem somewhat.

 

Or perhaps allow players to "escape" the battle like on the open world.  Let them keep their durability, but perhaps give them an XP/Gold penalty.

 

Or some other mechanic.  I would rather die by cannon fire than old age.
