As i always see the same questions in the help chat, i thought posting a link would answer questions faster than retyping the same stuff over and over again, so here we go.

Why can't i equip my guns.

The numbers in brackets determinates the grade, the first bracket for cannons the second one for carronades.

Why is my crew number red?

Your ship is undercrewed, do missions and level up.

Why can't i join a fight?

Either it's a mission of another player or the fight is older than 5 minutes.

Where can i get missions?

In port, top left corner, Home/Equipment/Missions/...

I can't find my mission.

Your mission is named Admirality Order and the swords are higher above the sea, try to find this.

Does trading give xp?

No.

What is contraband?

Atm it just says you can attack ships of your own nation, without becoming a pirate.

How does boarding work?

Shoot chain into sails to slow them down, then grapes over the deck/railing to decrease crew, try to turn your enemy upwind until both ships are slower than 3,5kn, then press G and play boarding game.

Where can i buy repair kits?

Home tab of port, right hand of selling ship button.

What are ship letters for?

They're just intel, some people post them in nations chat.

Will my ship be lost if i get sunk?

Your ship has a durability, that's its live count, loosing your ship reduces it by 1, if you reach 0 your ship will be lost.

Can i restore durability?

No, not yet.

I can't sell my ship.

Only dur 5 ships can be sold in the shop, but you can sell it in the home tab of the port to a NPC.

I can't buy fleet ships.

They're a help for beginners and can only be bought below rank 4.

How do i use fleet ships?

If you check the box of the given ship it'll automatically supports you in fight.

How can i give orders to my fleet ships?

Press M in battle.

Where can i repair my fleet ships?

Only in port on the fleet tab.

What are the different item quality grades?

grey = basic

green = common

blue = fine

purple = mastercraft

yellow = exceptional

Can i use spyglass in the OW?

No, not yet.

Thank you this was actually very helpful.

Wish I had this a week or so ago so I didn't have to ask about 20 twitch streamers xD.

You definately need, at the top:

Why can't you join that battle?

Its either someones mission, and you're not part of their group, therefore you cannot join, or its a sea battle and it started more than 5 minutes ago, in which case once in range the box will read "Battle Closed".

It's question 3, i tried to keep a topic sorted structuring and my answers concisely, you know, lazy people, tl;dr reasons.

I'm also aware that there are a lot more questions around, but they are more advanced and i was lazy myself to write a Q&A.

Most common noob question: "Why is there no position indicator on the map?"
Answer: "Because there isn't one."
Noob: "That sucks! How am I supposed to navigate? I'll just get lost! I'm scared!!!"
Answer: *sigh* "Use the map and set a course using your compass. Watch for landmarks and the shape of land compared to the map. If you are not sure where you are, find the nearest port and find the name on the map. If it's a friendly port you can enter it and a grey circle will appear on the map.

I know you can switch servers and keep your xp/rank, but lose everything else. Are you sure deleting your character then making a new one will keep xp/rank?
For example if I deleted my character as Great Britain because I wanted to switch to, let's say, Holland. Would my xp/rank remain the same?

I don't think the devs of NA worked on POBS before, is this correct?

I think you are correct, i havent heard of the NA devs working on POTBS

Do different nations have some different perks?

No

Do different nations have some different perks?

Technically no.

However, since some of the nations have far more players than others, it's an unbalance that way.

Also some nations have far more ports than others. Spain and Britain for example cover practically the entire map.

The position of the capitol of each nation can make a difference.

Great post!

Another one that took am a few battles to figure out was the brighter white strip in the white firing arc. It's where the current gun firing aim line is depending on your gun firing sequence

Maybe too obvious but it took me a while to figure it out    :P

Actually I had no idea at first why I was always missing my shots. I had to find a couple youtube videos explaining the crosshair for elevation, and the thin white line for the next cannon that will fire. So definitely a common noob problem.

Ya, once you figure them out and and the R and V keys too it REALLY helps a lot! Along with manual sails.

I think this guy, AxeManAnt, has some great easy to understand noob guides. And they answer a lot of questions too.
