Another hot button topic gone wrong - who'd have thought? Sin Kahn (interesting name there), you need to come to terms with the fact that Religion and Morality are not the same thing. In fact, these two concepts are usually much further apart than anyone will admit. The "Immorality" you describe is not a result of a lack of Religion - it's called "Escapism", to want and need to imagine one self in a space and time where morality and consequence do not exist but for it's representation in the game's rules. We are here to discuss that representation. The outliers - those individuals who troll and bait and goad online are victims of their own GIFT (look it up on know your meme), and it is again not a result of religion, but the result of idiots having the luxury of anonymity and an audience with no responsibility or culpability. In fact, your insistence that you are somehow a moral paragon because you are Religious betrays those who've bled and died for your Religion and your right to practice it so openly, but I digress. TL;DR - Morality =/= Religion

*Sigh* I loathe to weigh in on this, so I will try to stay neutral as somebody who really doesn't care all that much about it: Hopefully "Avatars" go so far is a mugshot with a "oil-painting" filter and a nice hat tacked on - initially at least. However, being an MMO and having towns a villages means that, inevitably, there will be players who would like to walk there, with an avatar of some sort. It's a massive development block and will only happen long after initial release, but it is inevitable. RP isn't dying soon, and the wonderful allure of cosmetic goodies for real money to play doll with an avatar is a revenue stream that the devs simply cannot overlook. Also, it will tie in very much directly into the planned "Exploration" part of the game - in fact, it's sort of a requirement, so I will bet my last doubloon/real/guilder/franc that Avatars are inevitable. This is a hot-button topic, and remains so because, of course, those in the discussion generally represent the other side as wanting the extreme. Coupled with living in a day and age where we live with social sensitivities that are taken to very edges of extreme, internet assaults on one's personal character, accusations of misogyny and misandry, revisionists, anti-revisionists and opinions twisted and taken out of context, it only gets worse. The fact is, this game is representative of history, but it isn't a media form that is given to the strictures of history. I'm sure France will win battles far more often than is historically correct... should French players give up half way through the battle because it's "correct"? No, not in the least. On the same note, French players have no doctrinal orders to aim at sails exclusively, while the British have none that force them to fire on the down-roll. These are concessions made in the name of good gameplay. Surely more concessions will be made down the line as features get added, and thus we will inevitably get to avatars. To welcome and support as many preferences as possible, I assure you, concessions will be made, and with the social climate being what it is, these concessions will be made thanks to outside pressures. Or the Devs could think of something extremely clever and sidestep this whole mess. We can only hope. However, while we're discussing these things, we should never forget that we're a community, a good community, drawn here by a brilliant idea, a good vision and loads of hard work from a half-dozen guys in Kiev who really want to do right by us. Lets not devolve this into The Holy Order of SJWs vs The Stinky Chons of the Internet shit-slinging, please?- 199 replies

Once the devs have finalized the Specs and Requirements, our very own players will be helping the Dev team with all sorts of assets, most important of which will be the ships themselves. So if you're a good modeller or texture artist, look around. Loads of people in the "Shipyard" sub-forum tossing out ideas.

My framerates have somehow improved... I was getting ~75fps on a single GTX780. After the last two patches (and one nVidia Driver update) I decided to crank it up to Custom with all the bells and whistles going. Now I'm getting 100fps+ - drops down to about 80fps with significant action and rough seas... Did I accidentally break Unity?

Cannon recoil & crew animations

This I think would be an ideal long term solution - not really important right now, but will add a lot for those who want it, while taking nothing away form those who don't. -

Here's what I was thinking: NA Frigate: And the HMS Unicorn of 1748 (Lyme Class): But that's pure speculation. Still, she's a very pretty 28-gunner - be nice to have something near the up-gunned Surprise, but not quite as heavy. -

I've always wondered whatever happened to the "Generic Frigate" seen here? The "Heavy Corvette" is the Surprise, the Leda-Class is the Trincomalee... where is this sea-green and white beauty I saw so long ago? Also, the Schooner from that page looks a bit more like the HMS Halifax (1768) than the Lynx. Did you guys decide to go with Replica ships instead? Just curios, of course. She looks a bit like the Lyme-Class Frigates. -
Okay - posted my issue in the "Ping" thread - should be posting it here.

I should probably add that I was sailing the Yacht at the time this started happening, in the new and improved Small Boat PvE (it's much better now, btw - the matchmaker no longer actively hates me). Machine Spec is as follows: MSI Z77G43 Gaming MoBo Core i7 3770 @ 3.7GHz 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz CL9 RAM Samsung 240GB SSD MSI Gaming Edition GTX 780 running nVidia 344.48

Problem: After today's patch, NA crashes after only running for a few minutes Why is it s problem? It's pretty obvious methinks... What should developers do: I've gone into my application log and pulled the crash dumps, which I'll post here: The program Client.exe version 4.5.1.22018 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel. What is: Naval Action? - A video guide.
KillBox replied to Flip's topic in Patch Feedback and General discussions
More what, exactly? Look, Naval Action is just that - it's about Naval Action. World of Tanks has people coming back after 30 000 battles and it has only 3 consumables, left click, right-click, scroll and WASD. Yet it remains compelling for many different reasons not related to how complex or simple the game is. It gets down to how compelling the game play is. Done right, you can fight a million battles and never get bored. Done wrong, people will stop playing your game. It's a self-righting, self-teaching system, and it works. Again, look at my older post - there's going to be loads to do not specifically related to combat. Also - I'm a Star Citizen backer - I've already waited out 2 years for that, and will wait it out twice over if it means that we finally have a game not being crapped on by EA. Ditto for Naval Action. Take your time, guys. Get those specs out for user-ships so we can help generate content. On your third point - really, you should just use canister shot on that straw-man, okay? Nobody asked for Total War: Naval Action or 360noramrodmusketsnipe FPS combat either. A few animations on deck and muskets being fired by Marines is more than satisfactory. I was referring to perhaps adding more options and more counters to avoid playing Rock-Paper-Scissors Online, and then having Open World options once the prize is taken (loot and scuttle, assign a prize crew etc.) which aren't immediately relevant, but will be. Look, as it stands, it's a nice video, and I get where you're coming from. I don't agree with everything, but hey, whatever. Right now though, I've made nearly a dozen fair points you've yet to address - you don't have to of course. It's a free internet. But I'm done here. Pass me a Lime and some Rum and I'll see myself out. -

They have no plans to do otherwise. Paid content (I believe admin mentions it somewhere on one of the pre-order threads) will be vanity content for the most parts. As far as ships go, for the most part the whole community here is agreed that it should remain restricted to pleasure-boats, gigs and other nice-to-haves. We will most likely see custom flags and pennants, paint schemes, nicer uniforms on the Avatar etc. as cash-shop content. And if this game engages me, I will purchase this content. Flip just effectively proved my point. The Soft Sim is Soft enough for a 9-year old to pick up in an evening. No need to alter the game's vision to pander - if she can do it, the average Steam buyer can do it too, which will do wonders for new player experiences and retention. There's also the point at which adding complexity for complexity's sake doesn't add to the experience. Again, there's still loads coming in - boarding is only just in it's first iteration (nothing more than a RPS counter system at the moment). Once that's fleshed out, along with looting and razing, there's gonna be loads to keep you mentally engaged without making the game clunky. Edited for spelling. -

Again, I say Soft Sim, you say "Sim". These things are not the same. The heart of the game (in actual fact, as per the devs) is RvR (Realm vs Realm) or Nation vs Nation as you please. PvP is a purely a thing in that happens as a consequence of RvR, not the other way around. No need to meander about on the Main looking for a fight from 10000 randoms - Navies used to look for each other and beat each other senseless. Have a browse at the Open World plans and you'll find that, even though this is a Soft Sim, if will draw in more players than we're expecting - thanks largely to plans for dedicated cartographers, explorers and merchants. So I'm not too worried about the population, as I believe it will draw a good amount. And again, no you don't need six-figures in player numbers, even with an open world: APB, STO, even PoTBS all have shamefully small communities compared to their heyday and their initial plans, all have open worlds, but they're still limping along - STO is still in active development. SW:TOR is another offender after pissing away half a billion USD, and if it keeps on life-support, it may break even over time. The term "MMO" is completely nebulous at this point - the only games to retain "Massive" amounts of players are WoW, WoT, LoL and DoTA. So in short, I'm taking the middle ground here. I'm predicting far more than a couple hundred online concurrent, but not nearly close to any big-time MMO. And that's okay. A six-man team doesn't need a million a month budget to keep oil in the lamps, and with the community generating a good chunk of the important content (ships and assets) what you have here is a cut-and-shut hotrod built on a budget but still loads of fun. It's this whole new "Crowd as part of the Development" thing - crazy but it works so far. We can debate population sizes, retention and turnover rates - I'm more than happy to do so. I actually found your video rather well put together - and yes, I understand what an Opinion Piece is and of course, you are entitled to it. The bottom line is, what you're suggesting is that the game should be more accessible to a wider audience, and so reach the monetary success you believe it deserves. While commendable, it compromises the core vision of the game. At this game's core is the idea of an Age of Sail "Soft Sim" - realistic enough to appease most real sailors and us desk-sailors, while things happen quickly and easily enough so it doesn't become tedious and boring. Most here believe this core vision should not be compromised, myself included. All other arguments stand at the edge of this core discussion. This core discussion is why Star Citizen exists - it's why Elite: Dangerous exists. It's why Indies are finally standing up and getting noticed. Because developers are sick and tired of compromising their vision in the interest of pandering to the masses, to get to release dates faster and in time for seasonal sales. Developers are creative people - let them create what they want to create. They want to create a Soft Sim with loads of real-world sailing qualities - that's why we came. They want the advice of serving seamen, tall-ship sailors and hobby historians - that's why we post here. Also, to address your very... creative interpretation of the Pay-to-Win phenomenon: If, in your mind, a 12-gun Dutch Yacht with a Da Vinci Fresco on her stern-quarters amounts to "Pay-to-Win" in a game where a 36-gun Frigate with over six times the gun poundage is set to be the average - I will heartily suggest you go look up Pay-to-Win and ponder it's meaning in real depth.
